What is really funny though is ...I am not 100% sure, I am pretty certain this was made by the original guy behind the old "PUFFS Tissue" commercials, back when at least they used to be stop motion instead of CGI and had just a touch more of that atmospheric nursery rhyme tone.

You know, despite the film's darkness, the rats don't really look very scary at all. In fact, I personally think they actually look kind of cute.

What is it with old fairytales having fucking scary ass characters and have them sleeping with everyone (literally on of the og versions of Red Riding hood has her riding the fucking wolf)

Wow, I completely blocked this from my memory. I remember watching it as a kid and being very disturbed by the visuals of the downing rats because I used to have two little female rats as a kid.

I remember the pied piper I grew up with actually did have the piper lead the children away to never be seen again The only child who didn’t go was a young girl who was crippled and in crutches and so couldn’t keep up with the rest What always creeped me out is when the girl was found by the towns people she didn’t want to go back. all she wanted to do was follow the pipers song

in the version i grew up with, the children were overworked by the adults so it justifies the pied piper taking them away and leading them into a much more happier environment.

having it's origin in the 13th century, it is likely that the loss of the children (in the original story) is connected to the children's crusades or to the fact that lots of (young) people were heading east for new settlements at that time. I think, the parallels to the children's crusades starting in that time frame in cologne are pretty obvious. such an interesting yet scary piece of history! I actually live near Hameln (that ist the german name of that town) and the story here goes that the piper had the kids walk into a "mountain" (well, it is more like a crevice). This crevice, said to be "the one" still exists and during archaeological excavations they did find children's skeletons. But they "only" date back to WWII (creepy enough).

Many of you had the story where thr children on towns either get missing/ drown/ so. But I guess only me who had the "friendlier" story where the adults so amaze to the piper that they decide to follow him & leave the town (like his followers) but he instead choosing a cripple boy to be his follower on his journey.

We made a trip to that town in 5th grade and there was this guy dressed as the Pied Piper. My classmate and I kept grabbing his massive feather he had on his head before our teacher scolded us lol

so, this is based off a real event, where in Hamelin, Germany, almost 200 boys disappeared overnight. they were most likely forcibly recruited by soldiers and made to march off, away from their families. tragically, it is believed most of them died from starvation or exposure from the long march. now, there is a happier account where some historians have theorized that a handful of these boys made it to Poland or another neighboring country, but honestly it's widely believed and acknowledged that most all of them died pretty soon after leaving Hamelin.

I had a german exam on this story. The version i had was that the rat catcher first took the rats, then gave the rats back and stole the children to sell them to the devil.

I can’t remember if you did or not but you should really review “Alice” from the 80’s. It’s a live action/stop motion Czech film and it’s amazing. You should also watch “Blood Tea and Red String” (2006)

Did you know that rats can actually swim and hold their breath? It is possible for them to actually enter a home through the toilet so if it makes you feel better you can imagine that they swam downstream to a new home and let the people think they drowned. Happy endings for all!

The verion that I heard when I was a kid is that the piper drowned the rats and then when the people didn't uphold their part of the bargain he then drowned their kids.

The version of the Pied Piper I always heard as a kid was that he led the rats to be drowned after jumping from a cliff, or were drowned in the town well (so much for not poisoning the water supply I suppose). After the towns people all collectively refuse to pay him (not just the lords) he sends all the children off the same cliff/into the same well. I then always assumed the town slowly died off after that because I couldnt work out how they would make more kids. XD. This story and the story of the Lambton Worm always stuck with me as a child growing up in NE England as they seemed like local stories to me growing up (tbf the Lambton Worm was based in a town only an hours drive from my home).

I think the German spirit is to invoke the Brother's Grim fairytales if no happy endings/ harsh reality endings. A.k.a traumatize children to behave, very effective 😅

So like rats can swim quite well... My personal favourite adaptation of the pied piper is done by author Terry Pratchett (RIP) in amazing Maurice and his educated rodents, a novel set in discworld. The rats are intelligent and use a kid to scam people out of their money by pretending to be a plague. It’s funny, has some deep philosophical moments in it and a great introduction to the 60 book long series known as discworld

You gotta watch the Czech version of Alice in Wonderland stop motion version called Alice (1988). You have to watch or listen with your eyes closed first then rewatch it with your eyes open. The sound effects are harsh and creepy along with creepy stop motion animation!

I think the point of killing the people because he saw the inncent woman killed was to suggest that the people were just as much of a pestilence as the rats were. This is emphasized by the fact that they turn into the rats they've hated before being drowned. I like this version more than any of the other piper stories because of this reason

I watched a Disney version of the Pied Piper as a kid. Naturally, this being Disney, the Piper didn't drown all the rats, but he made a big wheel of cartoon cheese appear, and when the rats crawled into the holes of the cheese he made it vanish. But when the townspeople refused to pay him, he took their kids away because he didn't want them to grow up selfish and ungrateful like they were. The cartoon ends with the Piper taking the kids into a world where they're happy and safe, but then it ends and we never know if they're returned or not. And then when I was older I saw an episode of that PBS show hosted by James Earl Jones called Long Ago and Far Away, where they had a stop motion animated version of the Pied Piper but it was darker and the piper was kind of creepy, but not nearly as much as this. But he did drown all the rats except one, and when he took the kids away one little boy was left behind because he had a Tiny Tim illness and couldn't keep up with the rest. Someone once told me if the story happened in modern times, the Piper would be arrested for child molestation and kidnapping. Because fairy tales bad.

oh my god! I had the collection of the book at the beginning of the video when I was a baby( ladybird well-loved tales), they were super dark, I guess being fateful to the original fairy tale. Can't believe I recognized it.

As far as the piper taking the children being a punishment. Honestly if you really think about it, it’s not really a punishment towards the kids, more like a saving grace. The piper is taking the kids away not only to punish the adults, but to save the children from following in their parents footsteps. If he left the children alone, they’d just grow up to be the same type of assholes their parents are. For all we know, he probably took the children to another village where they will be raised by better parents and taught the values of honesty and trust.
