There is milk in the mothers brests. NICE LOGIC. That baby wouldn't have died if that mother knew how to feed a baby with her brests. Did they even knew such things in 1945? Or is it hump until something happens like in the old ages of -5000 to 1900?

I watched barefoot gen after seeing your review. for those wondering it's a really good film that I highly recommend, however there is no shortage of death and gore. [if those clips at the beginning were an indication.] I went into the film with the same mind set I went into grave of the fireflies and came out an entirely different person. this movie showcases the brutality of war and the suffering people who survived went through, in short it's insanely brutal. it is not for the faint of heart but it is an experience I do not regret or and one that i will never forget.

When Shinji died, I just broke down. I haven't even seen this movie and that scene of Shinji yelling "Brother! Brother!" made me break down crying. I myself have a little brother and it just feels awful watching that scene. And people say the skull thing is creepy, the clone brother is weird, but can you imagine being in Hiroshima in 1945? No, you can't, you think you can visualize that, but the pain and grief those people felt is unimaginable. The trauma is unimaginable, You might view it as "creepy" but if your whole city was reduced to rubble, and you watched your family get crushed by your home and burnt to death because of a disagreement countries had, you would go insane. And I think the "cloned brother" visualizes the fact that Shinji was so very important to Gen, he can't bear not having him, and sees him in that child, and has to stay with him and protect him. The bomb killed the mom and Gen when it detonated, not literally, but figuratively. They lost everything, including their sanity. Hell the child might've been a hallucination, Gen just saw his brother and when he mentioned the child, his mom, also ridden with grief, just went along with it. It's very depressing and sad. The holocaust was an awful event, tragic and immoral, but then you just say "Oh yeah we also nuked japan twice" and then end your WW2 lesson, We (I'm talking about my education from the US) just gloss over the fact we killed millions of innocent people, women and children, animals, for no reason other than we had to fight their military. How infuriating do you think that is to people that survived that? They had their family brutally murdered by something that was completely out of their control, They couldn't do anything about that, they can't stop something being dropped from a plane. I personally see the Holocaust as an equally atrocious act to the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Sorry for my rant, just a really depressing movie.

Apparently, there are still “shadows” in both cities in spots close to the landing site of the bomb. People and animals close enough to the epicenter were incinerated on the spot, and all that was left were these “shadows”. Ash stains left in the pavement and against any buildings that didn’t fall to the ground. I’ve never been, so I’m only going off of what I’ve heard, but apparently these ash stains are still there in the streets.

you should give the 1978 Japanese animated series treasure island a review this series has some really dark moments and it truly freaked me out a bit as a kid I hope you give it a watch. that is if you can find it as for me I have only been able to find a german dubbed version fine by me because I can speak german but it would be a tat difficult for someone who can't speak german.

another one to review is Nobody's Boy Remi from 1977 again like the above there are dark moments in a way the whole series is a continuum of sadness with upbeat lighter moments thrown in to break this dark veil nothing goes right for Remi and if it does it falls apart later. the music by Takeo Wanatabe is simply superb. also, this series is a real tear-jerker so be prepared to ball your eyes out! i was and still am a real fan of the series and the series is easier to get your hands on than 1978 treasure island but, be sure to get a copy of the first release because the series was re-aired in the 1990s with some of the darker scenes removed. when I find merch of the original 1977 run in thrift stores or charity shops or flea markets I always pick them up and take them home I have one of those sticker storybooks those of the type you always get with memorable tv series but you would never be able to complete for either the series would end and so did the sticker production or you never got the right stickers to complete the book well, I found not one but two! completed books! great! one for me and one for my sister who also has nostalgia bordering on madness for the series.

Not to dismiss the horror of the aftermath, but read what the Imperial Japanese Army did to civilians in Nanking. The A-bombs were acts of war, but the Rape of Nanking was pure sadism. This is just war and horrible all around. I think one lesson everyone forgets is that aside from the tragedies we always see, war makes animals of all of us. We all become savage and brutal, because that's how we survive war. Best we can hope for is once it's over, learn to be humans again.

I do feel for the people that had to experience Hiroshima and Nagasaki.. but what alot of people don't understand is at the time it was a necessary evil.. because if the US invaded instead of thro the atomic bombs at the honestly the cost of human life would of been more more devastating for not just the US but Japan as well it would of been a complete shit show for both nations which is exactly what was looking into account when the US was making the decision weather to invade or bomb japan.. you also have to understand the culture of the japanese warrior and the Samira code.. the death toll and suffering would of been so much worse is we invaded instead because not only are the japanese people wear known for there ferocity in combat the tiny little island brought many nations twice there size to there knees including china and gave russia a run for there money and the US also at the time they had the best navy in there region that gave the US navy as well a run for there money

War...War never changes. After watching both films, I have to say this: Back then...We did what we had to do. It was fucked up(Something both films portray wonderfully), but there unfortunately was no other way. All we can do now is look back at the sad, gruesome, yet eerily beautiful consequences of what we had to do back then, and I am grateful that Barefoot Gen and Grave of the Fireflies exist so that the Americans of today and the people of our time can truly grasp the devastation that had to be caused to bring an end to World War II. War is hell, but at the same time...War never changes.

The scary thing is that I finished reading a book called "Hiroshima" or something like that A DAY AGO. Some of the soldiers had puncture holes in them from dirt and pebbles, while others LITERALLY had their eyes melted. A woman's leg was crushed beyond repair, a man was stuck in a river between two boards, and a woman and her three children's house collapsed on them. Only her youngest child survived.

I wish scenes like the nuke scene without sound were more common. I personally think that scenes like bombings or anything else disturbing without sounds are way more disturbing then scenes with sound. It gives a scene like the nuke scene a more somber tone like, the nuke stopped everything. The people’s lives, time, society (in the affected region) and even sound itself. All you hear is the wind and people dying. It would’ve been even more morbid if there was no sound at all.
