Apologies as I had to reduce the size of the footage and add in a background for this review as it was getting copyright strikes left, right and centre, taking a grand total of 5 upload attempts! Either way, hope you guys enjoy the review. :)

As a propaganda film directed towards japans younger audience whom the director felt contempt for. He truly created a hateful charactor in this film that I very much disliked. Every sad thing outside of the death of the mother is literally caused by the brothers bad decisions. I’m sorry to say this but he isnt the first generation of humans whom have had to rapidly grow up or be left to die, he probably won’t be the last. War is hell, but he was old enough to understand sacrifices needed to be made, ones he was no longer able or willing to make the actions he needed to take to ease the disrespect his aunt was giving him was clear, go help the war effort. instead he chose to be lazy even if in mourning and ultimately dragging his sister down along aide him, as the aunt did not treat her with contempt understanding she was too young to help or work.

I'm sorry to be that guy, but the USAF was not established until 1947, before that they were the Army Air Corps. I'm sorry I needed to get that of my chest.

Films rarely make me cry, but the first time I watched it I was sobbing, not only for the movie characters, but for everyone who lived in Japan during WW11. This film being a true story also makes it hurt even more. Grave of the Fireflies is a tragically beautiful movie. 10/10 ☹️

Something concerning their Aunt, I know everyone hates her, and Seita hates her, and its all fair and good to hate her, but really think about it, did Seita make the right decision? To run away, refusing the shelter and food of someone he hates, even if that life was much safer. What I saw in this movie was an allegory to Japan's refusal to surrender after the US had shown the power of a nuclear weapon, with just one dropped, already took Hundreds of Thousands of Lives. And what did that refusal to surrender do? Tragically, another bomb was dropped, and more people just died. Was it worth it? Was a refusal to surrender really worth so many more people dying? Japan didn't have a counter to a goddamn nuke, all they could have done there was either surrender, or just allow many more of its people to die. And they did, all because of something as stupid as honor and pride, something they hold so stupidly high in their country pilots were willing to purposely die for the pride of their country in Kamikaze attacks. And thats how I see Seita trying to depend on himself and himself alone to take care of his sister, and the refusal to accept any aid, especially if its from people he hates like his aunt. Imagine if Seita had sucked it up and just did what his Aunt told him to do, even if he himself wouldn't have been at all happy with their lives there, is it really that bad of a life? If he hadn't left, would he still be alive? Would Setsuko still be alive? What did Seita truly achieve? Those are my thoughts on the film.

Did you actually watch the film or is this someone reading the script? Why do you keep calling the main protagonist “sigh-ta?” From either the original Japanese film or the English dub, his name is clearly “say-ta.” Sorry, but though this is a good review, you lose me at the mispronunciation.

I broke down crying, I literally put my hands to my face and wouldn’t stop crying for a long time. There isn’t any other movie that has impacted me this way, makes me realize how fortunate some of us are and also think and pray for the thousands Seita and setsukos all around the world suffering of starvation while the rest of the world is indifferent. This movie is a masterpiece and it should be shown to future generations in schools.

Cried at the end of this. Watched it a second time cried at the beginning and at the end. Good times. Not every story needs to have a happy ending, this is one of my favorites along with plague dogs. I will say though that the Aunt was nice until hearing about the mother being dead, in which she changes her personality entitely. Also the female cousin shows remorse for them and I like how its not pushed in your face. There were like 2 scenes though from this movie that were the best of all time. When he rolls over to sleep next to his sister and she pushes him off, that and her last moments until he comments how she never woke up. Truly fantastic movie

Was it implied that Seita was raped when he was turned in to the police? Is that why Setsuko encourages him to visit a doctor to get help for it and why he turns his head? Was it in shame for what had transpired? Good grief. This film.

As mentioned by someone, this movie really makes you a better person. I broke when Seita was losing everything dear to him little by little until it came to his sister’s cremation. He stayed with her without moving, watching as she was cremated away. No one should have to experience something like that but when times are hard, one’s gotta do what one needs to do.

The Vietnamese famine of 1945 (Vietnamese: Nạn đói Ất Dậu - famine of the Yiyou Year) was a famine that occurred in northern Vietnam in French Indochina during World War II from October 1944 to late 1945, which at the time was under Japanese occupation from 1940 with Vichy France as a puppet government of Nazi Germany in Western Europe. Between 400,000 and 2 million people are estimated to have starved to death during this time.[1][2] The demographics vary from French estimates of 600,000-700,000 dead, to official Vietnamese numbers of 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 victims.

I've watched it twice and on both occasions I cried like a baby. I even started crying part way through this at the death of Setsuko. One of the things Ghibli Studios is fantastic at, and let's face it. They're pretty fantastic at most things, is the portrayal of very young children. How they look, sound and behave is realistic and charming. But this film for me pulled no punches. Even revealing the cruel act by the Japanese government with regards to rationing. They're aunt is horrible. No two ways. But she was only given rations for her immediate family and not her niece and nephew. Thousands of children starved to death during WWII because the orphaned children had no where to go. And even other family may not take them in because they didn't have enough food to allow for feeding extra mouths. I believe there were a number of laws brought in after the war because the shame the country felt with regards to how children were treated. I honestly think that this and Barefoot Gen are two films everyone should see. They're both hard to watch. But they are painfully honest.

Friendly reminder the Americans did the same to Germans, over 200,000 killed in Dresden alone from firebombs. The allied targeted civilian populations, even the blitz was a half hearted counter attacked compared to allied bombing of Germany. Statistics don't lie, MSM do.
