As a propaganda film directed towards japans younger audience whom the director felt contempt for. He truly created a hateful charactor in this film that I very much disliked. Every sad thing outside of the death of the mother is literally caused by the brothers bad decisions. I’m sorry to say this but he isnt the first generation of humans whom have had to rapidly grow up or be left to die, he probably won’t be the last. War is hell, but he was old enough to understand sacrifices needed to be made, ones he was no longer able or willing to make the actions he needed to take to ease the disrespect his aunt was giving him was clear, go help the war effort. instead he chose to be lazy even if in mourning and ultimately dragging his sister down along aide him, as the aunt did not treat her with contempt understanding she was too young to help or work.

There's also another great sad anime movie about physical disabilities, but it is really hard to find an English dub online. The movie is called "My sister Momoko", released in 2003 in Japan. If you're interested to do a review of this one, I highly encourage you to do so.

Grave of the Fireflies is not fictional. In reality, the boy did not die and carried the guilt of his sister's death his whole life. His name was Akiyuki Nosaka. He wrote a book about his experience and the death of his sister. The movie is based on that. I feel it's important people realize this isn't some bloated dramatization, this is based on facts. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_of_the_Fireflies

War never brings good things. But if you want peace, you fight that's worth dying for. Never fight in a cause that won't bring good things to life. The Military Government of Japan caused this suffering of it's own people. Attacked a Superpower unleashed it's Deadly Arsenal of it's overwhelming Economic might. They were stubborn thinking the Americans would fight them till the end until Nukes have been dropped and the Soviets declared war on them breaking it's Non-Aggression Pact. Nukes are a Currency of Peace at that time of the Cold War, but a terrible price.

I broke down, when Seita takes a last look at Setsuko. If a fear I've had for years... Looking at a relative or a close friend a last time. Sparked by the passing of my grandfather. Regarding the movie, the whole theme of the fireflies is that in ancient times, perhaps even today, fireflies are symbolic of the souls of the recently passed. So the recurrence of those are very striking. And if the start of the movie hadn't been with the death of Seita, for native viewers, the constant reference to fireflies would not only be representing the many deaths happening in the last couple of months of the war, but also a building dread/foreshadowing of what is to come. And it is quite scary of how short a timespan we are looking at June 5th 1945 to September 21st 1945. About 3½ months. While the doctor did say malnutrition as the cause, the small red blotches on Setsuko's back, are also a sign of scurvy, which wouldn't show until atleast a month into lack of vitamin-C. And almost none of the food that the pair eat, have vitamin-C apart from the watermelon. Which came too late. There would have been vitamin-C in the sweet potatoes, which contain a lot of Vitamin-C. Japan Surrendered August 15th 1945. By then, Setsuko was very far into under-nourishment. Guessing from the onset of scurvy with the one month rate, the pair would have moved out from their aunt, at the very latest, by end of June or early July. Which means, that they lived at their aunt's place for about 3 weeks. Seita survived for about a month after the death of his sister. Sadly... effective food relief from the occupying forces didn't start until October of 1945. The story was semi-biographical, where the author states, that's it's based on his experiences, where he lost a sister prior to the Kobe bombings, his adoptive father during the bombings and his adoptive younger sister a couple of months after the bombings - to malnutrition. His writing of the short story was in 1967, during great economic growth of Japan. The movie was released about 20 years later in the 80's. Once again, during a great economic time for Japan. Writing the story, was his way of apologizing to his younger sister. And the nature of Setsuko's death, was an exact match to the death of the author's own sister. Other notes from the author was that Seita was an idealized version of himself. More giving and selfless. Whereas the Author admittted, that while he wanted to share all the food he could get with his sister... when he was hungry... he ate. To his great regret. Seito as a character in the animated movie, was written as an imperfect character, with the mindset of the post-war children of Japan. How they'd act if they were in such a situation, rather than a 13-14 year old child, who grew up during the war, where humility would be more important than pride. It's a hard-hitting movie. A small self-contained story of a failed attempt at life.

Okay, this may sound harsh after watching the movie. I imagine there's quite a few japanese animated or live acton films about their suffering in WWII (fire bombings, atomic bombs etc) and that's understandable. But did they ever portray the Nanjing massacre or the stuff they did in Korea and Manchuria in animated form or otherwise?

So I thought I'd like to hear thoughts about this one too. I'm at work right now. I still couldn't hold back a tear. Every time you see the deteriorating state of Setsuko, it is simply gutwrenching. I get this sinking feeling of despair every time. Thank you for the review. I love this movie. I hate this movie.

The aunt wasn't the nicest, but she did have a good point more often than not. She also was not happy about them leaving, but she let the boy make his own choices. She basically represented the Japanese wartime mindset. Everyone should pitch in to aid the country however they are able. Charity is fine, for those that deserve it, but it isn't unlimited, and you are expected to pick yourself up and pull your weight at some point. Lying to a child about death isn't helpful in the long run, especially a parent's death, so while she wasn't the nicest about it, the aunt made the right call breaking the bad news. The reality is, the boy and sister were added strain on an already stressed to the max situation. She simply didn't have extra to give, so what she was giving was coming directly from the stomachs of herself, husband, and daughter. If the boy had worked to contribute, they would have received more needed food/supplies for the entire household. The situation was too dire and desperate to indulge in charity for too long. It could have put her own family at risk. Even in a bad situation charity exists within people, but charity at the cost of your own safety/security must be measured carefully, or you will become a victim yourself. Was she a bit of a B*****, yeah... She could have tried a different approach, but that isn't who she is or what she represents. Total war like they were going through is not a good time. Everyone is in the warzone and either helping or hurting the effort to win. While they may no longer be at war, the Japanese mindset is still pretty similar, just not to as much of an extreme. The real villain of the movie, in so much as the movie has one... Is the boy himself. His pride and selfish decisions lead directly to his sister's and his own deaths. He had multiple opportunities to change direction and prevent the tragedy but didn't. He could have tucked tail and went back to his aunt's, I very much got the impression she would have taken them in again, under the condition that he contribute to the household. The police officer was understanding and kind, and had the boy explained his situation more, likely would have been able to help in some capacity. Beyond that, being the son of an active duty veteran would have helped in some manner had he sought out the right people, with the police officer likely able to aid in that as well... But the boy didn't do any of that, as likely any aid from others would have meant him being put to work in some capacity. Heck even at the end, his father could have been alive. If he had been on a ship that wasn't sunk in battle that is. After the surrender they didn't force sailors to go down with the ships during the disarming process. There were so many potential ways out of the situation, even after his sister died, he could have survived. In the end his selfish pride lead directly to him and his sister's death. He was unwilling to do the one thing he really needed to do in order to actually protect his sister. This movie felt like a punch to the gut, yeah I cried... But I also felt anger at the preventable nature of it. When I first watched this movie, this message came through strong, and I later learned that the creators intended that to be the message.

She gave more food to the ones who worked and that makes sense! They work! Then the boy just goes nah I won’t wanna work fuck that I wanna fuck around. He legit went live in the shit to not work. I only feel bad for the little sister because she had to die because of her dumb brothers decisions. It could all have been avoided if he stayed with his aunt. He could have said sorry and ask for help but he literally let his sister die. This movie just pissed me off honestly.

The ending isn't actually positive for me, since nothing has really changed. Japan and all other humans just continued their lives and rebuilt the cities on the graves of their ancestors, forgetting what tragedy they have brought upon themselves. Patriotism, tribalism, war, these things make me feel like humans do not deserve better. One rotten apple does spoil the barrel, so the excuse that there's only some evil people ultimately leads to the same conclusion, although I'd argue it's even wrong by itself. What made me cry is the realization of the fact that millions if not billions of humans have died because of the actions of the stupid and the greedy. Never before have I been so enraged after watching a movie, makes "One flew over a coockoo's nest" seem tame. ...
