Steve Reviews: The Nightmare Before Christmas
تاریخ انتشار پیش سال

To ease our way out of the darkness and into the festive spirit, let's take a look at the long requested, The Nightmare Before Christmas. A nice transition as it seems to be both part Halloween, and part Christmas. Offering a lot of strange Tim Burton style stop motion visuals, coupled with a heartwarming festive story.

I don't think it's implied that Sally has psychic powers, it used to be common for people to believe in seeing omens that meant specific things, and it was the omen itself that was considered real, the person didn't need powers to see it.

Oh yeah Disney this is to dark also Disney let's do a cross over with Final fantasy that features child murder in its mobile games. Characters getting burned to death and turned into crystals and than getting killed along with a prequel with a really fucking depressing ending

Fun fact: When the movie was released in 1993, it wasn't a huge hit only getting half of it's money back and it started growing a fanbase by 2003 - 2005. That's the main reason why people love this movie to this day.

I think you expect too much from this movie. It is about Halloween monsters meeting Christmas, and it is a musical also. There isn't much else to it. It is great in visuals and music, that's what I remember it for.

Buddy I think you're reading a bit too much into this I think Jack is just having a midlife crisis. Again this film is more visual substance for children than actual substance in the context of yuno story arcs. It's a very simple little film

To be honest didn't understand the ending either. My guess of the ending is "sometimes two things don't go together, cuz it will result in big problems". Idk but didn't understand the ending either.

He was happy to go back to being the pumpkin king because he realized that santa claus' role is not his and that he has a place where he is needed and intended to be. But more than that, realizes that switching roles isn't what made the series of events exciting it was the act of stepping out of his comfort zone and using his brain in creative ways he'd never experienced before.

It just a very imaginative setting with Halloween having it's own town and trying to shift towards Christmas cheer. Story holds enough to enjoy that much and see more of the world and I agree a lot of classic holiday stories are like 10 pages when simplified and movies stretch things out by a lot.

I really think that the message of this movie is more to do with "embracing who you are." It's more of a "play to your strengths" kind of thing at the end. Jack wasn't depressed by _being_ the Pumpkin King; he just thought that Halloween itself was growing stale and listless; he was bored. And yet, even though he's seen an example of Christmas first-hand in Christmas Town, he makes no-objection to the Halloween-Themed Christmas the monster-folk are making; if anything, upon seeing their work he becomes even more elated by the thought of doing Christmas. He doesn't bat an eye at someone wanting to make a hat out of a rat or a bat, or the fact that the Reindeer are Skeletal, or that the toys are all scary... See, what Jack really needed was _new_ scary things; and by perverting Christmas themes into something scary, Jack now had new ideas for what he could do for Halloween. So in essence; Jack was doing what he did all along; he just did it differently.

Being shot out of the sky literally _can't_ kill Jack - as he points out himself, he's dead and can take himself apart just for personal amusement. Admittedly, he might be in trouble if blown or smashed into small enough pieces.

I always took the message as "Always be who you are, not what you're not. You can branch out and try other things, and it is okay if you fail, but never deny who are really are, and what makes you truly happy." Also, Jack had, like, 5 kids at the end of the original 1993 soundtrack. OF COURSE he and Sally had a thing! XD

you should totally play the Kingdom Hearts franchise, this movie is in the games and how you describe the interactions in it, makes me feel that KH dug a little deeper into that. For example in the 2nd game which has more to do with the movie, Santa in one scene literally tells jack why they enjoy there work, Santa likes seeing the joy and happiness when the children find his gifts and Jack loves the fear and frightened look he gives to them.

I always figured that the void in his life was that he was in need of companionship, but he misinterpreted his feelings, thinking that he wasn't happy with his current existence. His divine revelation was that he found himself again, and found what he was missing, which was love.

Here is an idea what if jack realizes that he wants to be the pumpkin king again because he sees that every one in town wanted to help him with his crazy idea, that every one actually pitched in just for him because they all care about him he sees that and he probably thinks that they love him just the way he is that he actually gives every one else meaning to there lives. I mean have you ever had a group pitch in for you and your ideas because they love you probably not and jack realizes this and is like “man I’m lucky to have every one care about me” so that’s why he decides to go back and be the pumpkin king, but that’s just a theory. Sorry if you couldn’t understand this I’m not English.

This might be reaching on my part, since I do have a very strong personal attachment to this film(Nightmare Before Christmas and Jurassic Park were the first two VHS movies I ever personally owned, and I was blown away by both of them in theatres), but I disagree about the underlying message of the story. Yes, Jack has been doing the same thing for years, has begun to feel stagnant, and quits on Christmas after his first attempt, but I think the theme is more along the lines of learning to love what makes you special. Jack needed to realize that he was in a rut, and when he threw himself into trying to make the greatest Christmas ever, he was able to engage his passion and creativity. He got excited about his life again instead of going through the motions because he wasn't feeling challenged in his Halloween role. He studies Christmas and tries to understand it, but it never really clicks because when all's said and done, he isn't Santa Claus; he's the Pumpkin King. For me, the story is about relearning why he holds that title, and the reason he's best at it is that he truly loves it. It can be easy to think you've outgrown something because it's ceased to get your blood pumping like it used to; sometimes that means changing your direction in life, but sometimes it means reexamining your life from a new perspective. The movie has its share of flaws, but that's the central message that I've always gotten from the story.

I've been watching this film since I was 6 and have a couple of clarifications based on my "years of experience" (lol) Lock, Shock, and Barrel are more like a gang with Oogie as their mob boss than their dad. They know he's evil, and they revel in it, so their weird turnabout to the good side at the end is a little weird, but then again, they KNOW Jack can be hardcore when he wants to be and I don't blame them for picking the winning side. I'm sure they'll keep causing havoc on their own. i think the epiphany in the graveyard is more about Jack finding confidence in himself. He felt stale being the Pumpkin King, but now that he has great new ideas for making Halloween fun, he realizes that he doesn't have to be stuck with the same traditions as always. He likes Halloween, and he's good at it, he was just in a creative funk at the beginning. Finkelstein and Sally's relationship is kind of like a father/daughter one, where he is overprotective. The creation he makes at the end feels more like a "wife" character (eew), and now that he's more focused on Sally's... stepmom, I guess.... Sally has a bit more freedom rather than being under his watchful eye all the time. She probably still lives in the lab with them. There was an added scene in the theater that my dad still remembers, that I VAAAguely do (I was pretty young) that they removed for some reason from other releases. It shows Jack and Sally years later, married with kids, celebrating Christmas, and Jack basically says that if he had to do it all over again, he would do the same thing, implying that if his mistakes got him to this happy place with a family he loves and a life that he enjoys, then so be it. It really changes the moral of the film. But yeah, they tease that Sally has a crush on Jack but there is NO reciprocation until the last scene. That's always been weird to me.

Pretty sure what Jack was missing was love. And he wasnt weary of being the Pumpkin king, he was lonely. And when he found Christmas town, he misunderstood the warmth he felt from it as Christmas should be the new thing for him. In the end he realizes that the thing he needed was someone to love, not a completely new identity.

Gonna reiterate what a ton of people said; You missed the lesson. It's not 'you failed at a thing so back to what made you depressed'. It's more like... Its okay to be bad at something. You tried. And even if you fail, you had a good time, and you learned something. Jack learned to appreciate his own talents and skills ( "That's right, I *AM* the Pumpkin King!" ) and accepted himself for *himself*.
