It truly beggers belief that even an abscure title like this was remade. It's gone beyond taking the classic to assimilate , they are just copying and remaking everything. I have a 60 min VHS cartoon video of a turd, that needs the CGI treatment lol

I can't even watch the scene where it's described how the rabbits die in a mass panic to this day. Still traumatized because as a kid I thought it's a regular cartoon. When I watch Felidae, the screaming of cats burns into my mind for days, but Watership Down... I can't even watch it.

The original is the best. The point is they cannot remake this movie ever. The one that they made in 2018 claiming to be a remake is bulshit. Because you cannot remake a masterpiece. you cannot make a messterpiece better than what it already is it's already a messterpiece. Watership down 1978 is a masterpiece that can't be remade or complicated turn in 2018 is nothing but a poser want to be. The 2018 version can not and will not ever live up to the professional value of the original watership down 1978.

What irritated me more about the remake is much the Lion King remake, their decision to go for CGI and to attempt a more realistic looks, makes it hard to tell any of these characters apart from each other. It also feels like the remake squandered the opportunity to be creative with its CGI when portraying certain scenes. Irritated me as well that they tried to create a romantic element that even the book didn't have because it was pretty much established in the book that rabbits don't take stock of romance like many creatures might. The remake also missed the opportunity to combine both reasons established in the book that does are better diggers than bucks so they are vital for even living in a warren and are needed to carry the future generations. With how much longer the remake is, theres no excuse why they couldn't have fleshed put everything better than the original.

Instead of Bright Eyes they gave it Fire on Fire by Sam Smith which I do think is a wonderful ear worm that belongs with the tone of the movie. For me WSD has always been about the culture, magic, world building of the wild rabbits of the English countryside and how they would have their own language for human things, their own wants and needs and life cycles that are already super difficult to survive without mankind encroaching. It's a fast-paced, deadly, short life for a rabbit which is why they want kittens and borrows and grass while they can. A creature that lives and dies like that would surly be obsessed with creationism and afterlife right? Neither adaptation strikes the same tones as the novel. But the longer new version dives into their rabbit-view of the world a little more.

To be honest though, I like the remake way much better. I love the opening and how they did it, and I love the new animation way better than the original. Sure, yes, the original was great, but I just feel like you should have given more props to the remake! Also, with the warren filling in, Iin the remake, I really don't think they could have done the same as the original, because it's more realistic, and they obviously can't just do that, and shift their realism. Plus, I absolutely thought that particular scene was quite intense, and it had me holding my breath. I dunno, I just really don't like ( *hate* ) this review. Sorry.

07:40 - Guess you never read the book? That's also a biological fact. Bucks don't dig, they protect the warren and fight other bucks. In the book and the animated show it is Hazel who talks the others into actually trying to work, but that's also why they are motivated to rescue the does. Blackberry was the only female with them in the cartoon, and she couldn't dig it out alone.

I love Watership down... I own the book, the sequels, the animated series. Not really a fan of the old movie as it simplified too much and made the characters look too much alike. But boy, the new one... I could only watch it for maybe 3 episodes. After seeing General Woundwort looks like all the other CGI rabbits, with zero expressions? And the fight scenes... I just grew tired and gave up. Such a waste, given the great voice actors. Also, I know the BBC is pisspoor, and can only afford crap CGI (as seen on Dr Who) but boy, I seen console games with better animals than these. As for secondary characters, the 1999 animated series does a better job fleshing them out than this one did. For starters, you can tell them apart!

I would love for you to read the book and get your perspective on it. The original film does a much better job of sticking closer to the book (except for Violet's existence, which is not a thing, and Woundwort killing Blackavar... also not a thing) than the remake does, but even then it has its own edits (probably for budget and time reasons) that just don't add up. In the book, the bucks actually start to dig the warren with the help of Strawberry (who, by the way, is a buck in the book), but the book explains that the digging of a burrow is the natural job of a doe digging for her expected litter. The Effrafan does also express how much of their discontent was due to reabsorbing their litters before birth (rabbits do this naturally under stress) and not being allowed to dig. Also! The book never explains WHO Clover's litter is by (I assume it's Holly, because it explains that Holly takes a liking to Clover because she seems more robust than the other hutch rabbits), though it's never outright stated.

Yeah needing does to dig was TOTALLY STUPID. A prime example of how modern feminism is toxic and infantililizing to women. "We need women to create life" or "we need women to work". Which seems more empowering to women? Hmmm???? This change up to be more sensitive and PC denies our nature and dumbs down women. Women and men can both work equally, sure. Men can never ever ever HAVE BABIES. Thanks for taking that away from women, remake.

Omg, you just said everything I hated about the new and old adaptations. Having read the book several times as a child. This book was written in the early 70’s and Adams had seen both the horror of WW2 as a child and the destruction of countryside for housing soon after. It was a children’s book based on the stories he told his children when on car journeys, thus it’s marketing as a children’s novel. The new version sanitises these themes for the modern “snowflake” audience!

I think the reason the animation is so automated is because of one thing= budget and time...... you might think the animator were payed to do this. But looking at it, i doubt the animators were payed well enough and given enough time to do this. This must have been an extremely rushed job. The team lead and senior animator couldn't even bother re-check and correct the animation, suggest that there wasn't enough time to finish and refine the animation. Most of them looks like blocking stages. They don't outsourced their job, but were given hellish schedule to finish it, and it shows. Had they outsourced this to another country where the animators can outwork the one working on this, the animation would not be this subpar. You cannot compared this to Spiderman, that movie was heavily outsourced elsewhere where people can work overtime without getting compensated. Yeah, i am not joking. The movie is done by non-Americans who were pay less to do more.
