Steve Reviews: The Brave Little Toaster

Today I will be looking at the 1987 classic The Brave Little Toaster.
Most famous for it's disturbing scenes scattered throughout, including some IT inspired clown monstrosity. How does the rest of the film hold up?

I was traumatized by the death of the air conditioner. Like bro he literally had a mental break down and then exploded.

I'm 30.... and still have two action figures from my childhood... Toy Story wasn't even an influence. But the fact I was able to escape and create epic battles and hide away from what my parents had to struggle through. Yet I just took a baseball bat to an Air Fryer. So.... idk. lol.

I didn't see this movie very much when I was a kid, but it certainly had a grand adventure with the house hold objects searching for their master.

Still one of my favorite movies. Learned a lot & also was one of those who cried about the flower & was so mad at the toaster for not going back to be nice & assuring. I get the lesson, but still hurts. Junk yard giant magnet closing his eyes while on the hunt was terrifying bc it showed his confidence.

There's another hilarious example for that trope in South Park, during that overly dramatic and sad episode where Kenny dies, even though he dies all the time.

Me, my brother and our friend watched this at some point when we were kids, and man I never forgot it. The parts I remembered most being the air conditioner-scene and, of course, "Worthless". Since we're Swedish, we watched the Swedish dub, naturally, (which, in hindsight, was pretty shit. At least the song numbers) so I would walk around with "Worthless, worthless, worthleeeess" (in Swedish) on a loop in my head whenever I thought of the movie, until I took the hint and realized I could, in fact, rewatch it as an adult. And lemme tell you, the uneasy feeling I associated with the entirety of this movie wasn't just a kid-thing. Everything in it always felt so... lonely and desolate. Even the occasional happy song or music track didn't quite sit right with me; still doesn't. On another note, man, how I long for the rebirth of 2D-animation...

Fun fact. This film is still missing from Disney+ while yhe crappy sequels aren't. I think they're hiding it.

I watched this movie as an adult, and gave me a deep traumas, but... I think it's one of the most ibteresting animated movies that exists. His dark atmosphere, his nonsense, all gives you a permanent depressive sensation, even it has a good ending.

That's actually a point I never realized watching this movie. Every one of the appliances has a tangible role in their adventure, EXCEPT the Toaster. He's essentially the most useless of them. And this movie, like Toy Story, explores the very human fear of becoming useless. The only thing that gives him purpose is baking bread for the Master. That's why he's the most determined to find him. It's why he feels guilty for pushing the Blanket away, it's why he has a terrifying dream, it's why he becomes depressed when he leads the gang off course, and it's why he choses to sacrifice himself to save the Master.

About that 8:00 scene.... It's importance comes from the fact, that protagonists have never experienced nature... And it's a completely new thing for them, like all great outdoors. You can seemingly remove it without loss to the plot, but think about it other way: what if we remove the first scenes, showing protagnists doing chores around the house? My point is, in the first minutes of movie we are getting familiar with their work and how they live. And then - the appliances are getting familiar with something that they have never really seen before (animals and nature, which are very familiar to us). We know how toaster or vacuum cleaner works. But here they work quite differently, just like humans. Basically, we, as viewers, learn about world of sentient household appliances, and then - sentient household appliances learn about our world.

Haha, to this day I still don't understand why a clown shows up in the toaster's nightmare. As a kid, it didn't make sense that a clown could be a toaster's nemesis. Also they made another movie where they go to Mars apparently, but I haven't seen that one.

This was by far my favorite movie as a kid and is still one of my favorite films. Maybe it is because I'm autistic, but I am VERY attached to my appliances and I've given them their own names and personalities. I was and still am particularly attached to my vacuum cleaner and blanket.
