Steve Reviews: The Bojack Horseman Finale

This was meant to be a quick review of the bojack horseman finale that I was hoping to get out last weekend, but what was planned to be a roughly 7 minute review turned into a 20 minute one. So sorry I'm a bit behind the times, but it meant I could put more effort into the editing, so I hope you enjoy!

*The View From Halfway Down* 12:50 The weak breeze whispers nothing The water screams sublime His feet shift teeter-totter Deep breath, stand back, it’s time Toes untouch the overpass Soon he’s water bound Eyes locked shut but peek to see The view from halfway down A little wind, a summer sun A river rich and regal A flood of fond endorphins Brings a calm that knows no equal You’re flying now You see things much more clear than from the ground It’s all okay, it would be We’re you not now halfway down Thrash to break from gravity What now could slow the drop All I’d give for toes to touch The safety back on top But this is it, the deed is done Silence drowns the sound Before I leaped I should’ve seen The view from halfway down I really should’ve thought about The view from halfway down I wish I could’ve known about The view from halfway down

I don't think the final episode was a mistake and that it was kind of dull on purpose, and this makes it work. It's like the calm after the storm. The calm is not spectacular compared to the storm, but it is calm. That was the general overtone of the final episode. Calm.

As a commenter here said, I disagree with the idea of the show ending on his funeral and people reminiscing over him is a very irresponsible way to end the show given the heavy subject matter the previous episode dealt with. It is often a suicidal person's fantasy and would inadvertently romanticise the whole idea of suicide by encouraging such a fantasy. The second ending works significantly as a conclusion as it truly adds to the anti-suicide message by showing the value of life and meaning of it all. It would combat the idea of a suicide meaning a release from all your problems and so much more if handled right.

Sorry, Steve - even though I usually like your reviews, I have to point out that you've completely missed the point of this particular Show. It ended as it should have - by not actually ending. It gave us the dramatic finale in the second to last episode.... and then Life just went on. The message is that Life never goes out as planned - but it simply goes on. We can't run away from the consequences of faul decisions - whether they are ours or belong to those around us - and yet those consequences are not the actual end of us. There is another day. And all we can do is just try to become somewhat better with each day.

i'm seeing a lot of comments about how ending the show with a suicide would be a bad route to take, but have any of you considered that not everybody is capable of living a happy, healthy life? as someone who has attempted to take his own life but now wants to see this through to the end, i understand the damage that being told there's a way out can do to somebody. you must acknowledge that for the people who are already teetering on the brink, if bojack isn't the catalyst that makes them go through with it, something else will. to blame a show for convincing someone to end their lives is tantamount to saying violence in video games and music is what makes people kill others. you have to hold yourselves accountable, the media is just a catalyst, it's not committing the acts themselves. to truly be an adult means you're choosing how to act, you cannot blame others. the final episode eludes to the fact that even this event won't change bojack, he will never learn to stop pursuing the spotlight, so it's far more cruel to let him keep destroying himself in any possible capacity. while it's good to see the other characters having moved on because they really didn't need his influence in their lives, what about how many times they've enabled his poor behavior, yet hold no responsibility when they can just remove themselves? it reminds me heavily of the controversial 21st chapter of a clockwork orange, which only comes off as self-gratifying and basically retcons the entire purpose of the book, that some people cannot or refuse to change, no matter what awful thing is thrown at them, or how many people try to encourage or even force them to change. this ending just feels so cheap to me, because it's palatable for a wider audience. maybe not every story needs to have a happy ending, and once in a while, you can experience something truly exploratory rather than the same shit you always want because it's easy and makes you feel better about yourself. art doesn't owe the audience anything, and the right audience will be there to enjoy it if it's not the majority's cup of tea. it's pretty obnoxious and even antithetical to art itself to say that any piece of media has a responsibility to save people's lives rather than telling a great, coherent story. art is supposed to make you feel in your own way, not tell you what or how to feel. truly great art gives you the foundation to come up with your own conclusions, and that doesn't have to appeal to you.

@Jessica i will check that out, thank you. i do find that interpretation interesting as well, like how the brain releases dmt as it dies "tripping". perhaps he really did just want to feel like everything got better for everybody else after his demise, would be very accurate to his rather narcissistic character.

    • Jessica

      پیش 27 روز

You should check Savage Book's take on this ending, I think you would really connect to his interpretation more (as his video explained that the ending is leaning more toward being open to interpretations rather than a "clean" or "good" show ending) P.S. some of the interpretations believed that Bojack did die, and ep 16 was Bojack's "imagination" of how things could be if he didn't die

I agree with most of your points. Except for the part where BoJack should've died and stuff... I felt like I was supposed to cry at the end but I was just disappointed... I just said "Well, that was depressing? I think? I'm gonna go to sleep it's late" The only thing that dwelled with me is "This finale is bad and I hate that Netflix ended it prematurely".

For some reason Herb's words touched me more than the poem did. That's not to say the poem wasn't good because it is but as somebody who had always feared death and grew up in a religious house hold it kind of just spoke to me, because I do believe there is only one life and once you die that's it just like Herb said. So in all I like to believe this, death happens and that's ok and when I eventually die then that's ok even if nothing else happens after death. Don't get me wrong I'm not glorifying death because yes death is a sad and depressing thing and sometimes people die too soon and people will always have different views about death but I think it's healthy to talk about your thoughts and feelings about it even to a professional like a therapist. That's all I have to say for now that's my TED talk.

I'm a little late to this since I never watched the ending and had since unsubscribed to Netflix and never got a chance to watch the conclusion. I remember back when season 2 came out, I wrote an essay about how this was going to be the ending (no, it wasn't for school, I just did an essay for fun). However, instead of it being a suicide in the pool, I figured it was a drug overdose that caused him to spiral out of control to the point he unknowingly drowns in the pool. The show would often allude to this fact with the opening of the show, the painting of a horse in pool, and the first attempt driving backwards into the pool with a Tesla. I've always known it would end in a pool, but knowing now that it actually ends with him being brought back, I'm kinda disappointed. I really wished it ended with the final death. Still, I did like the show for what it did give and how far I did watch.

He really couldn’t leave well enough, alone which is one of the driving forces of conflict throughout the show. Despite this finale, I really enjoyed this series, each season has a different kind of nostalgia from the year that I watched each season. The first season I watched one day while hung over at a friends house while they were at work, yes I was allowed to be there, lol.

I also didn't like the final episode too much, however, I think you are missing the point here, episode 15 really doesn't matter plotwise, but does it has to? I believe that even with bojack not dying ( or not idk have your own interpretation) it still has a lot of meaning, it shows that even with all that, time's arrow moves forward, and forward only, all the characters in the show still live their own lives. If you think about it really the final episode was really underwelming, for good reason, but it perfectly concludes the show's theme of regret, and if the view from halfway down doesn't summarize that beatifully I don't know what would

So reading the comments everyone has a bit of different idea of how the show should've ended. People I noticed tend to either like the ending for... ...reinforcing the quotes "life's a bitch and you keep living" and the "it gets easier, you just have to do it everyday - that's the hard part" which goes well with the show's repetition of the 'the day after the "end"' sort of theme. Who knows if Bojack will relapse again? Or if he'll get better after? or like it for not going with the "Bojack as a martyr" route which could potentially be taken as suicide is the answer to a few. Maybe both. People who prefer ending the show at 15 or in general having Bojack die I noticed think along the lines of the ending being a sort of cautionary tale. They may also look at the ending as his mistakes finally catching up to him. To add, people even interpret the finale differently. Some people might think that the bits of closure in the ending was his "view from halfway down" - his regrets as he commits suicide. So perhaps Bojack did die. In an interview, the creator did say something along the lines of the viewer can think whatever about the end. Todd even has a line saying that maybe the art is more about what you get from it. Sorry for the long comment. I just like summing my ideas in text like this.

I actually like that he didn't die at the end, but totally agree with the last episode being underwhelming. And I don't get why so many people say this is him saying goodbye to everyone and he's never going to see these people again. Dianne probably, sure, but the episode gives us no reason to think he won't still be friends with Todd, PC and Mr. Peanutbutter (who I imagine he's going to move back in with when he gets released).

Opinions be opinios, BUT saying that episode "The view fron halfway down" had no meaning is so god damn wrong, because in that episode bojack not only explores what was wrong with his life but also accepts his mortality, and is now able to move on from his past, that chapter of his life ended as he got second chance of life and as in his dream he said (yea I know it was secretariat, but it was in his head so he was basicly talking to himself) "If I got a second chance, I wouldn't care as much" and unlike secretariat who died, bojack got his second chance and is done with his life as husbans to no one, father to no one we know of and stupid piece of shit, so answering your question, I think he ended with bad unicorn series, and would just want to move on to a better life with no controversy

If I wrote the ending to Bojack, I would have it end with him dying. And instead of the 'ideal funeral', we are left with Todd, the dedicated friend, scrambling to set up a funeral for Bojack, only when it comes time nobody shows up. Think The Great Gatsby's funeral. Maybe Diane and Guy sent flowers and perhaps even PC, but nobody actually came to the funeral. Leaving Todd to gaze at his deceased friend's coffin. Complete silence. No music the entire episode. Simply allow the emotions to be expressed to find their way to the viewer naturally. And perhaps Todd says some words to his friend, starting with "Well.. it was nice while it lasted." and then it snowballs into a tangent of how awful Bojack was to him and his friends and family. Simply venting that once again "You are everything that's wrong with you."

There's a lot of talk about the suicide ending(my favorite) and it being irresponsible and that's not wrong. The suicide ending seems dark but it wraps everything up and ends the show. With the current ending it leaves so many questions and the lesson is life keeps going with or without you. The show was lobotomized, still there but something missing. All the other stories in the plot keep going without an answer. My take away was life goes on with or without you.

I agree that there was something off about the finale... one area that no one seems to be talking about it Princess Carolyn's arc. It was so random that she decided to marry Judah, I never saw them as a couple. They are both just major workaholics and now PCs work/personal life is completely mixed (I thought that was her main character flaw.) What about Ralph?? Poor Ruthie!! At the end we would imagine what happen like you. You think that it would be better if he committed scuicide maybe that he committed scuicide after the party like he dated this is the last time we will talk together. Or he has change that he think life is valuable and that he would get out of other people live to make sure he does not screw both they’re life. I feel like the endings you mention was pretty predictable and that's why I don't really completely agree with ending it in those ways. I do agree however that the ending was a bit underwhelming but I feel like there's a reason for that. People think that when life is going bad/good it will always stay like that and that's always going to be a false perspective. They ended it on a simple note. No matter what you keep on moving forward despite having a horrible past. And that ending they chose was a pretty safe route to conclude the story that we will never know if bojack will truly ever be happy or miserable for the rest of his life.

The issue with Bojack dying is that’s what everyone thinks would happen. This show subverts narrative. Having Bojack die would give that closure. But this show doesn’t have closure because life doesn’t have closure. The view from half way down is so damn powerful for the fact that it’s there. Not that it’s pivotal but the fact that Bojack almost dies but doesn’t. As Diane says “sometimes life is a bitch but then you keep living” or something like that, I don’t exactly remember. But that’s just what I think

The show was canceled by Netflix.. that's why you felt it unfinished. There is a theory that Bojack actually died. The finale is just in his mind, looking for closure from the main side character then that final flat line of heartbeat in the last scene is when Bojack actually dead in real time. But still I like the established ending because it sent a powerful message. i.e. Diane said something like "you meet someone that will make you the person you are today, and you only can be grateful for that. even they will not stay with you forever".

You missed the point entirely, life goes on, the show was good while it lasted, but now, everything moves on You don't need a happy or bad ending, that's why the final episode was left very vague and kinda meh, todd even explains it very nicely, the show is an art piece and it's left for interpretation, for you to come to your own conclusions, did bojack get a better life, or not, that's why the ending was nice, we don't need a grand spectacular big bang of an ending, we never did... Why, because even when you stop, everything else, and say it with me: Moves on.

Honestly I kind of liked the ending, but woulda liked the Bojack did die twist more. For me, one of the bits that made it was Todds last chat with Bojack. In it Bojack mentions how in a few months, he'll beat his record for being sober, Todd is glad to hear that and when he hears Bojack concern of relapse "Then you'll get sober again!" and begins to go on like a Stoners Wisdom rant about "You do the Hokey Pokey, and turn yourself around, that's what it's all about." That it's not the hokey pokey itself, it's turning yourself around. Bojack will mess up, he will let himself, and others down. But he'll turn it around and do better, as he's been doing throughout the final season. I genuinely liked it because it even works with the "It gets easier" insight. We will fail, we will do wrong, we will do the hokey pokey, but we'll turn ourselves around. That's what it's all about, and it gets easier, but we gotta do it everytime. We gotta turn ourselves around. That's what I got out of it at least.

To everyone saying that the show should guve a good message: FUCK YOU. This show wasn't about good people with good intentions, it was about real people with realistic problems in a bizare reality. Bojack shouldn't be a model, you should do better than him and better yourself even if he would have died in the end. It would have left a stronger message like: "avoid doing all that bad shit to avoid ending up like this", not the funeral fan fiction Steve suggested for the last episode, just nothing.

What I found most disappointing was Bojack's fall after the interview. I would have preferred that he not go back to his cocky attention seeking ways. The way the show, he could have been fine if he kept his mouth shut. By this point in the show, Bojack had changed. They should have let him keep the growth he had, but still let the world hate him for the past things he did.

If it ends with Bojack dying, what is the show about? That would undermine the whole message about change being gradual & hard work.

Finally worked up the courage to finish the final season. As far as I'm concerned, it ends at episode 15. That's the only way for the show to end.

Well over all I agree with you on how they ended it kinda just meh but like what I think is they should have let each character like you said just say what they thought about him at his funeral like when that episode with him on the pottum at his mums funeral and the final would be hollyhock reading the letter

honestly, i feel as though the ending of the show is quite weak considering EVERYTHING that led up to it the end of it saying that "yeah life sucks, but you keep going" after the last episode is about suicide AND bojack learns next to nothing from it? thats almost more depressing than if he just...yknow...died. honestly, i think that your second ending Steve would have been the FAR better option. Because now, with the ending that was given, Everything Bojack went through went in one ear and out the other. ESPECIALLY after the previous episode. there is a thing in the show that life issues cannot be resolved in 30 minutes, which is true. But Bojack had 6 seasons of struggle with no hope of ever changing or fixing anything that he did. If the show is striving for realism, then coming back from DEATH cannot be just swept under the rug.

I’m sorry but I disagree. I think it’s good that it felt like some stories weren’t finished and that the Hollyhock and Bojack didn’t fix their relationship. Life goes on and unfortunately not everything wrap up nice and neatly. And I think the episode before the final episode was important because even though they never say it, I think it gave Bojack a new perspective on life and the serious ramifications of suicide. Overall, I think it was a great episode. It dealt real and Bojack didn’t win in the end. Even though he was the main character, he was not the good guy.

I have not seen the series (is not my cup of tea), but from what I have now heard and seen a bit of him, I very much agree with you on number 1. I think he should have died in episode 15, and would like to have an episode where we got to see how the others rearranged after his death.

If you really think the show should have ended with bojacks death then you were not really paying attention to the messages of the show the whole time and just took it at face value

I know this sounds stupid but I think for episode 15 it might be in Bojack's mind as he tries to get closure on the people he screwed over in life before dying.

It was underwhelming to an extent and there were unfinished stories ... but that's the beauty of what this show is. You, the viewer, gets to contemplate the stories unheard and the characters unmentioned, just like the chaotic and unpredictable life of each of us. We forget about Hollyhock because just like the people in our own lives who we've hurt or done wrong by and who have never forgiven us...those who forget us are able to move on without us. Sometimes the end of us, is not the end for them. I love this show because it doesn't wrap a bow around end of each story and it leaves the end open to hopeful speculation. My summation of this show: We are all Bojack. All of the people we knew or thought we knew in our own lives, that we liked, loved or hated, each of them lived full and beautiful lives or something lesser that can only be speculated. We can't know the end of each but depending on what they meant to us, we can speculate and hope for the best of life... but the end is the same, all story lines we likely will never know. But, that is the beautiful tragedy of a life well lived. And such that this is a show well done.

I had mixed feelings about the way this show ended. I honestly felt they could've afforded to kill him off. It would be a good message to those who live toxic lives. Those who continue to spiral out of control end up going all the way down. That being said, if Bojack did die, I don't think there would be a funeral. Or if there was, it would only be glossed over. Cut to 1 year later. We see how everyone is doing since Bojacks Death and how that has effected their lives. The final scene being with Hollyhock, and how she felt she handled her situation. If she still regretted cutting Bojack from her life. She may even have a therapist she is venting to this about, who in the end asks. Do you regret it? Cut to credits.

You just did the opposite of what a lot of people usually do with finales. You want a more standardized one , but "bojack" Gave is an ending that most would probably have to think about a lot to understand. This is just the kind of story setup I love. I wish I could afford to watch this whole series.

While yea the impact would have been jaw dropping i feel bojack dying would contradict the series because it was always about hope, it was always about the aftermath our decisions have consequences and we are going to have to live with that even when we can't see a future.

Can I just say, despite the lateness, that I absolutely love this show's depiction of Death? Mostly in how each of these characters accept or deny it? As you can see from how Secretariat/Bojack's Dad and Cordurouy just kinda stumble into, afraid. They don't know what death could possibly mean for them and they, in their last moments of existence, try to avoid it, only to end up stumbling into it. But for Beatrice, Crackerjack, Sarah, and Herb? They know what death means. They accept it willingly. Sarah faces away and just leans back to drop herself in. Beatrice and Crackerjack dance and fall gracefully into the void without another word. Herb's in particular was the most poignant of all. If I recall his lines, after Bojack asking him if death was terrifying, Herb gives him the last bit of comfort as a friend he could offer, saying "No. I don't think so. It's the way it is, you know? Everything comes to an end. The drip finally stops." Herb, having had cancer, long ago accepted that death would come for him in some fashion, even if it wasn't at the hands of such a gruesome disease. He long ago accepted that there would be nothing and that he, in some fashion, would finally have peace. At the end of it, after Bojack says he'll see him on the other side, Herb only says "Bojack, no. There is no other side. This is it." He, of all the characters in this show, absolutely knows what the finality of Death is, and just lets it take him. Of course, Bojack, having lived a life filled with regret, can only panic and try to run. In the end, however, he finally realizes that he can't escape it, looking to Diane's voice as a last comfort before supposed end.. It is absolutely one of my favorite episodes because of this. A lot of people put so much stock into beliefs of an afterlife, but the reality of it is that no one person actually truly knows what lies on the other side of life. Of course everyone's reactions to it are going to differ from being terrified to accepting it warmly. It's probably the most mature way that any show has ever talked about death.
