I'm so sick of people reviewing nuclear bomb related media and giving the same dumb logic of "Hehuhhuh. Stoopid PEEPUHL, yoUU actuaLLY thInK DuCK AND Covurr woORKS?" Can you try doing some fucking research for once? They actually tested out everything they told people with actual nuclear testing. your whole "look at how that turned out at Hiroshima" logic is already making you look dumb, because looking at actual Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivor accounts show that the lower to the ground they were, the better chance people had of surviving.

I was told 2 versions as a kid, one where the rats were killed in the river and then the children disappeared to never return were a rumor soon after went around that the kids went to paradise to learn how to be good human beings. And another where he takes the rats and the rats drown, and later he does the same with the kids for them to drown as well before he disappears to never return and having the townspeople find a few parts of their children’s clothes in the water.

I think this movie was trying to be a bit of social commentary/fairy tale like warning to adults and kids. It honestly reminds me of the original Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. To me it was like a warning of not becoming a souless, mindless, heartless, greedy, materialistic society. Warning us to not lose compassion, love and kindness towards others. I think the young women was one of the few remainders, besides the Piper and Fisherman, who didn't care about materialistic things and what they could do for her but more on the things that mattered. Like the heart and morales of a person. Probably why she like the Pied Piper, as far as I could see he was a good kind man. He did want to be paid for helping out, and like who wouldn't want to be he's got to live somehow too, but when he didn't get paid he didn't throw a huge fit or immediately set out to destroy the village. It was only after finding the Young women he cared for disgraced and murdered that he decided to punish the town. In a way that greedy selfish man taking her life, was like evil snuffing out the last remainder of innocence in society, the last good thing destroyed. In the end that selfish action cause everything to fall on itself, "a house divided against itself cannot stand". The stories of The Brothers Grimm were dark as dark could get. Same with Hans Christian Andersen. Soooo dark. I suggest reading the both entire books and you'll know what I mean. I mean their were sweet cute quirky stories in both. Most of the stories though had miserably sad endings. The Pied Piper I knew was when the Pied Piper then lead the kids to the river and they drowned. That's the one that I knew at least. I didn't always understand what all the stories were trying to teach me at the time. However the brutality and sheer cruelity that the stories showed revealed many brutal truths and realities that did help teach me a lot about good morales, proper way to treat individuals, and the reality of our world. That not everything is a happy ever after ending or is rainbows and glitter. That not everything you wish for is what you actually want. That being good and kind will eventually reward you, that you also need to work hard for what you want. Good things won't just fall into you're lap and if they do you won't be satisfied with it. Not all the stories of The Brothers Grimms or Hans Christian Andersen taught me deep truths, a majority of them did though. I learned a lot from those old stories and as dark as some of them got they still hold a special precious spot in my heart.☺️💖

The thing that always bothered me about this movie, and others like it, is that they're all too ready to criticise the Western governments but say nothing about the communist aggression that causes the whole situation in the first place, so it feels like a side has been picked. Maybe they thought it would be pointless to criticise the Russians, or assumed their own artists were already doing so. For me, the classic movie that criticises the idiocy of both sides fairly is of course Doctor Strangelove.
